Eating
Out In Skiathos
Greek cuisine is colourful, using fresh, seasonal ingredients and
bursting with flavour. It is based upon traditional home cooked dishes which
are both deliciously simple yet healthy reflecting the Mediterranean diet.
In Greece food is a celebration of life, and if people are what they eat,
then Greece is a vibrant, fresh and incredibly healthy nation. Whilst
residing in or visiting Greece you will soon discover the important role
food has to play in the lifestyles of the Greek people, and it won't be long
before you too are caught up in this passion and enjoyment of eating and
drinking.
Skiathos offers a rich variety of Mediterranean Greek cuisine and many
visitors to the island remark on the wonderful selection of foods available
here. There is a profusion of eating places, from seaside family-run
tavernas to high-qualiy restaurants, boasting of traditional dishes found
only in Skiathos as well as from all over the world.
There are several extremely popular traditional dishes, at least some of
which you should try to sample during your stay. Seafood is the island’s
great speciality with lobster Spaghetti and shrimps saganaki being probably
the most popular. Other favourite dishes are: the delicious lamb kleftiko,
fragrant with oregano and garlic, octopus in a stew of red wine and shallots
and briam, a dish of casseroled vegetables, a selection of mezedes which
offer a little taste of many traditional specialities including creamy sharp
taramosalata made from salted mullet roe, melizhanosalata made from smoked
pulped aubergines and tsatsiki, thick with yoghurt, parsley and an obscene
amount of garlic.Afterwards the main course is served with plenty of freshly
baked bread and salad. Don't be reluctant to tear a piece of bread and dip
it into the different dishes.
Breakfast is also a very important meal in Greece. Go for fresh fruits
topped with thick yoghurt and honey, the coffee ‘Frappe’ or fresh orange
drink and the famous round cheese pie (tiropita) of Skopelos filled with the
melting feta.
A great way to remember the gastronomic trip in Greece is to buy cookbook
and experiment the different recipes back home. Accompany with a bottle of
a Greek wine and you will make Greece seem a step closer with every bite. |
