Skiathos Geography
Located in the north-western Aegean sea Skiathos is the natural starting off
place for the Sporades islands. (From the Greek for scattered). Although it
is the most famous of this group it is actually the smallest covering an
area of just 48 square kilometers, (6.5 miles long from east to west and 3.5
miles wide), 44 kilometers of coastline and a population of around 6.200.
Skiathos' two neighbors Skopelos and Alonnisos and the Greek mainland are just a
short boat trip away while the fourth island in the group Skyros is far off
to the southeast. There are also some smaller uninhabited islands east of
Skiathos which are worth a visit.
Despite being small Skiathos offers over sixty postcard pretty beaches to
choose from. The south coast is sheltered from the strong North wind and is
an ideal situation for that envious sun-tan and an opportunity to indulge in
all kinds of water sports. The north of the island has outstanding natural
scenery. Though irregular in shape the gentle landscape only rises to an
altitude of 433 meters. Skiathos is covered with pine, plane and olive
trees.
Belonging to the province of Magnesia the capital and main harbour of the
island is the town and port of Skiathos.
Skiathos Climate
Enjoying a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and glorious summers
Skiathos proves to be an ideal tourist destination. In mid-summer average
temperatures range from 30 - 35ºC (86-95ºF), occasionally rising as high as
40ºC/104ºF) and 10-18ºC (50-65ºF) in the winter. Very hot in July and August
the gentle (Meltemi) cooling breeze brings a sigh of relief to the evenings. |
